Postal workers have reported something very fishy going on in Dundee after finding trout stuffed inside three postboxes.

The fish, which were not stamped or addressed, were found shoved intact through the letter slot of three boxes in Menzieshill and Birkhill on Monday.

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said they would be "keeping an eye on the situation" and if it happens again they would be reporting it to the police.

She said: "Royal Mail gets some very intriguing items sent through the post. We've had traffic lights, insects, lizards, live scorpions, fruit and even prosthetic limbs but we don't encourage anyone to post anything perishable and unwrapped as it damages other people's mail.

"Anyone with any information should contact Royal Mail locally or on 03457 740740."

The trout are among some of the more unusual items found in post boxes.

Previous bizarre post has included stamped addressed vegetables, as well as bananas.

A Yorkshire couple even tried to post their dead cat to themselves, so they could say goodbye after it passed away while they were on holiday.

In another mail mishap, a mother is said to have tried to post a hot shepherd's pie to her son after he had moved away from home.

Ice, living creatures, human remains and rubbish are just some of the things Royal Mail will not deliver.

The company offers a extensive list of items that are prohibited from the post on its website, and warns those who break the rules can be prosecuted.

For anyone who still wants to post a fish, perhaps they could try using this underwater postbox off the coast of fishing village Susami in Japan.
