Senior exams go ahead at school hit by structural concerns
Balfron High School was partially closed after issues were discovered at the weekend.
Exams have gone ahead at a school blighted by structural safety concerns.
Balfron High School in Stirlingshire was partially closed after issues were found in a stairwell wall and atrium at the weekend.
Although the school has been closed to pupils in S1 to S3, senior pupils exams were prioritised.
Stirling Council said exams took place as planned in unaffected parts of the building.
A spokesperson said: "SQA exams have gone ahead as planned at Balfron High School today for S4-6.
"Pupils were directed to allocated rooms at the school when they arrived, with areas set aside for those who need to study before or after the exam.
"Every effort is being made to minimise disruption and ensure the best possible provision for all our pupils, and no repair work is being carried out during exam hours.
"Meanwhile, work is continuing on the logistics of returning the school to full operational status, and further updates will be provided as information becomes available."
The school was built under a private finance initiative 15 years ago.
The spokesperson said: "Recent precautionary checks at Balfron High School brought to light two issues with walls in a stairwell and the school's small gym, and parents were notified of this.
"These are issues that would have been expected to arise within a building that is now 15 years old and were not deemed to be due to building quality or practices at that time.
"However, further investigations by engineers revealed another potential issue with the wall of the stairwell which was not immediately obvious during previous checks, and additional issues in the atrium.
"Our priority is to minimise disruption and ensure the safety and well-being of all of our pupils and staff, and further updates will be provided as soon as possible."
Inspections were being carried out following Scottish Government advice after 17 schools built by Miller Construction were closed in Edinburgh due to structural faults.
It is hoped alternative temporary accommodation will be found for all pupils after Friday, with more details expected to be announced on Tuesday.
The spokesperson added: "Staff have been working closely with colleagues in other Stirling schools to arrange this, and all aspects of provision are being included: curriculum, transport, catering and pastoral care.
"This will be a temporary arrangement and plans are also being developed for alternative on-site provision at Balfron."
