A man who murdered a woman in the flat they shared in Glasgow is due to be sentenced.

Gary Stevenson, 27, stabbed 25-year-old Katy Rourke in the heart at the property they shared in Govan in December 2015 after the pair had been drinking.

He pleaded guilty to murder at the High Court in Glasgow in April and the case was continued for background reports.

He is due to appear before Judge Lady Rae on Monday for sentence.

The court previously heard Stevenson had drank half a bottle of Buckfast before he and Ms Rourke, originally from Broughty Ferry near Dundee, shared a bottle of vodka on the night of December 29.

Stevenson later confessed to police that he killed Ms Rourke, telling them: "I stabbed her. I think it was three times."

He told officers: "If it wasn't her, it would be someone else. I just want to tell the truth for the sake of the family."

Stevenson also admitted hitting her repeatedly before attacking her with the kitchen knife.

Ms Rourke's friends grew concerned after she failed to turn up for work in the morning.

Some time after 4pm on December 30, the friends went to the flat to see if they could find her and saw her car parked outside but there was no answer.

When police searched the flat they discovered Ms Rourke's body in her bedroom.

She had several wounds on her body, and a large kitchen knife was lying on the bed beside her.

Prosecutors described Ms Rourke as a young woman "with every expectation of a bright future ahead of her", and said her parents and sisters had been devastated by her murder.
