Hundreds of campaigners are to stage a protest calling for the closure of the Dungavel detention centre.

Protesters are expected to gather outside the immigration centre in South Lanarkshire around 1pm on Saturday to demand an end to the policy of detaining asylum seekers and migrants.

More than 15 detention centres around the UK and several across Europe will be targeted by demonstrators as part of a national day of action.

Campaigner Sally Martinez from the We Will Rise group, who have organised the protest, said: "We act in solidarity with those inside Dungavel, as well as the 30,000 detained nationally.

"We are sending a message that detention has no place in the Scotland or the UK."

Last year, a report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate for Prisons (HMIP) revealed vulnerable detainees were held at the centre.

Concerns were raised after it was found a torture victim and woman who had been raped were held there.
