A father and son accused of threatening to kill a baby before going on a violent rampage with a sword and a hammer are to stand trial.

William McPhee Snr and William McPhee Jnr are charged with attacking a man with a sword and destroying two vehicles with the weapons in Brent Avenue, Montrose, Angus, on June 22 last year.

They are alleged to have both assaulted Donald Stewart by brandishing a sword at him, chasing after him and striking him with a shovel and a hammer.

McPhee Snr is then said to have assaulted James MacDonald by aiming blows at him with a sword through the window of an Audi A4 car and striking him on the face and leg with the sword.

McPhee Jnr is accused of assaulting Shannon Stewart by striking her on the body with a hammer, causing her to fall.

The older man is also said to have culpably and recklessly swung a hammer in the direction of six victims, putting them in danger of being hurt.

Prosecutors say both men behaved in a threatening or abusive manner towards Shannon Stewart and threatened to kill her, her baby and members of her family.

Both men are then said to have wilfully or recklessly destroyed the Audi car with a sword by repeatedly striking and damaging the bodywork, lights and windows.

McPhee Jnr is also alleged to have destroyed a Ford Transit van with a hammer during the incident.

McPhee Snr, 46, of Fairlie Street, Camelon, Falkirk, and McPhee Jnr, 23, of Ure Street, Bonnybridge, Falkirk, both deny all the charges of assault, behaving in a threatening and abusive manner and vandalism on indictment at Forfar Sheriff Court.

Sheriff Gregor Murray continued the case to a further pre-trial hearing later this month.
