Life's a drag for new Dundee University rector Mark Beaumont
The cyclist has been taken on a traditional pub crawl in a student-drawn carriage.
Record-breaking cyclist Mark Beaumont is being initiated into campus life as he takes on the role of rector of Dundee University.
Students and staff joined in the installation ceremony on Monday afternoon before the new rector was handed over to the students.
The traditional drag saw Mr Beaumont taken on a pub crawl in a student-drawn carriage.
Mr Beaumont's appointment was announced in January and he follows Dundonian actor Brian Cox, who was elected to the position in 2010 and served two terms.
Mark said: "I am delighted to be appointed the rector of the University of Dundee and I am looking forward, with some trepidation, to the drag around Dundee's finest establishments in a carriage.
"I realise there is important tradition to be maintained here. Growing up near Dundee and still living locally with my young family has given me many reasons to be proud of its place in Scotland and the wider world.
"I am passionate about helping young people create careers that they are truly interested and driven by.
"I am looking forward to representing the student voice to the best of my ability."
Professor Sir Pete Downes, principal and vice-chancellor said: "This will be a fantastic occasion to install and welcome Mark Beaumont into the university community.
"It is great to see the students coming together for this celebration, and I am sure Mark will be an excellent representative for our students and an ambassador for the university.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank Brian Cox for six years of dedication as rector. We are all extremely grateful to Brian and hope that he will continue to be involved in the work of the students' association and the university."
Tim Hustler, DUSA president said: "This ceremony marks the start of a new era for Dundee University.
"For the last six years we have been very lucky with Brian Cox and all that he has done for the students. I have no doubt that Mark is up to the challenge and will always put the interests of the students first."
