A former Scottish international boxer stole "legal highs" during a raid on a shop.

Billy Moore, 33, became so desperate to get hold of the new psychoactive substances that he grabbed packets of them from the shop in Perth.

Perth Sheriff Court heard how Moore waited for the shop to open at 9am.

When he got inside he tried to persuade the staff member to give him the "legal highs" and cajoled other customers to lend him money.

After they all refused, Moore simply grabbed a handful of the packets and ran out of the This N That store in Perth.

Fiscal depute Jill Drummond said: "The staff member recognised the accused as someone who had previously purchased from the store.

"He was advised he had insufficient funds. He attempted to reach into the drawer of 'legal highs'. He took six packets costing £10 each. He ran out of the shop."

Moore, of Greyfriars, Perth, admitted stealing new psychoactive substances on March 12 last year, and also admitted two breaches of curfew during the same month.

The court was told Moore had "gone through a period where he went completely off the rails due to his involvement with drugs".

Moore, who paints oil rigs, could earn around £36,000 per year but could only work in the highly dangerous job if he passed regular drug tests, the court has been told.

Sheriff Fiona Tait deferred sentence.
