The co-founders of Ben and Jerry's ice cream have been arrested as part of protests at the US Capitol building in Washington DC.

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield were among around 300 people arrested as part of the "Democracy Awakening" protests, which call for action on a range of social issues, including climate change, workers' rights and racial justice.

US Capitol police said the protesters were arrested for unlawful demonstration activity.

"The history of our country is that nothing happens until people people start putting their bodies on the line and risk getting arrested," Mr Cohen said.

Democracy Awakening is aligned with theDemocracy Spring protests earlier this month, where demonstrators gathered in Capitol Hill to "demand Congress take immediate action to end the corruption of big money in our politics and ensure free and fair elections".
