'Everybody Loves Raymond' star Doris Roberts has died, aged 90, a family spokeswoman has confirmed.

The five-time Emmy winner, best known for playing the meddlesome mother Marie Barone to Ray Romano's character on the CBS sitcom, died in her sleep in Los Angeles.

Spokeswoman Janet Daily said that the cause of her death was not known and she had been active and healthy.

Roberts had appeared in the sitcom for every one of the show's nine seasons, covering 210 episodes.

She was due to appear at a reunion show at a TV festival in Texas in June.

Actress Patricia Heaton, who played her daughter-in-law Debra on the show, paid tribute to her on Twitter:

Creator of the programme, Phil Rosenthal described her as a "wonderful, funny, indelible actress and friend".
