Ukraine's Prime Minister has announced his resignation following months of political crisis saw western aid to the country frozen.

In a televised addressed Arseniy Yatsenyuk said he would formally tender his resignation to parliament on Tuesday

"My decision is based on several reasons - the political crisis in government has been unleashed artificially, the desire to change one person has blinded politicians and paralysed their will to bring about real changes in the country."

His cabinet narrowly survived a no-confidence vote two months ago but approval ratings for his party stand at just 2% with allegations of inaction and corruption against them.

Yatsenyuk said the president's party had already nominated the speaker of parliament, Volodymyr Groysman, to fill his post.
