A man has been arrested after human remains were found during the search for missing police officer Gordon Semp****le.

A 49-year-old man was arrested at a property in Southwark on suspicion of murder and is in police custody.

PC Gordon Semple, 59, who is originally from Inverness, had a meeting at the five-star Shangri La hotel at The Shard in central London on Friday.

The Westminster officer, who works in the anti-social behaviour team at Westminster City Council, was then seen on nearby Southwark Street.

But he failed to return home from work that evening and was reported missing by his partner.

Police were called at 1:07pm today to an address on the Peabody Estate, Southwark Street, London.

Forensic officers are searching the property but have been unable to make a formal identification.

Mr Semple's family have been informed.
