Woman accused of leaving baby to die in bin denies charges
Nausheen Rahman, 28, from New York City, allegedly, placed her daughter in a plastic bag.
A woman accused of leaving her newborn baby to die in a bin bag outside her block of flats has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse.
Nausheen Rahman, 28, from New York City, allegedly cut the umbilical cord of her baby daughter, who was still breathing, and placed her in a plastic bag before throwing her in a rubbish bin on March 11, according to the Staten Island District Attorney's Office.
Rahman entered her not guilty plea on a three-count grand jury indictment before State Supreme Court Justice Stephen J. Rooney in Staten Island. Rooney ordered Rahman held without bail, NBC News reports.
According to prosecutors, police made the horrific discovery of the dead infant after Rahman went to her local hospital suffering from bleeding as a result of giving birth.
She is said to have told doctors she had given birth at home and subsequently 'disposed' of the baby, prosecutors said.
If convicted, Rahman faces 25 years to life in prison.
