Drug smuggler released but Scots accomplice remains in jail
Michaella McCollum from Northern Ireland and Glaswegian Melissa Reid were jailed in Peru.
A Northern Irish woman jailed for drug smuggling in Peru has been released from prison but her Scottish accomplice remains behind bars.
Michaella McCollum, from Co Tyrone, and Melissa Reid from Lenzie, near Glasgow, were imprisoned in 2013 for six years and eight months after admitting trying to smuggle cocaine worth £1.5 million from Peru to Spain.
Lawyers tried to get the women repatriated after complaining about horrendous prison conditions.
A judicial process will now determine what, if any, conditions are attached to McCollum's effective parole.
"I can confirm Michaella has been released from jail and I'm waiting to hear the outcome of the judicial process", Kevin Winters, her lawyer, said.
