Nick Blackwell is expected to be woken from an induced coma within the next 48 to 72 hours, the BBC reports.

The 25-year-old boxer was taken to hospital after the British middleweight title fight with Chris Eubank Jnr had to be stopped on Saturday.

Blackwell suffered bleeding on the brain but did not require surgery.

Robert Smith, general secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control, said being put in an induced coma was a "very normal procedure".

"Now it's just a matter of waiting and seeing," he said.

Speaking afterwards, both Chris Eubank Sr and Jr said they would have stopped the fight.

The former boxer told his son, Chris Jnr, to stop punching his opponent in the head and to move on to body shots.

During the fight Eubank Jr said he did not worry for his opponents health, as he was focused on winning.

"But when I saw him on the floor with the oxygen mask on after the match, that's when worry set in."
