An offshore worker was found slumped in his car at the side of a dual carriageway with an empty bottle of vodka.

Graeme Smith, 40, was six times over the alcohol limit when he was found asleep at the wheel on the A90.

Smith was jailed for four months and banned from driving for five years after Perth Sheriff Court heard he has two previous drink-driving convictions.

Sheriff Fiona Tait told Smith his "extremely high" alcohol reading and previous offences meant custody was inevitable.

Fiscal depute Rebecca Kynaston told the court: "The accused's vehicle had been seen driving erratically.

"It was found on the grass verge of the A90 Perth to Dundee road ten minutes later. Witnesses approached and found the engine running.

"The accused was slumped over in his seat, asleep. The driver's door was open. There was a strong smell of alcohol from within the vehicle.

"On speaking to the accused, his speech was found to be slurred and he clearly appeared drunk. There was an empty vodka bottle on the centre console."

Smith, of Glenmarkie Terrace, Dundee, admitted driving drunk on the A90 near Errol, Perthshire, at 6.30pm on March 1. His breath-test reading was 131 mics when the legal limit is 22 mics.

Defence solicitor Ross Donnelly said Smith has been given a place on an intensive detox programme at Murray Royal Hospital.

He added: "This has served as something of a wake-up call for him."

Smith was previously banned for a year for drink-driving in 2007 and for five years for drunk and careless driving in June 2009.
