A woman is being treated in hospital after being rescued from the River Tay near Dundee.

A lifeboat was sent to the eastern side of Broughty Ferry just after 10.30pm on Wednesday after the woman was spotted in the water near to the rock gardens.

A spokeswoman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency confirmed that Broughty Ferry inshore lifeboat attended and rescued the woman.

The coastguard rescue teams from Carnoustie and St Andrews assisted in the incident.

Police Scotland confirmed they were initially called at around 8.45pm over reports of a possible missing person.

A police spokeswoman said: "It was initially a missing person's case but the woman was traced in the water at around 10.30pm.

"She was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for treatment."

It is understood the woman did not sustain any serious injuries.
