The bodies of a man and a woman have been found in the hunt for a couple who went missing on Britain's highest mountain.

Rachel Slater, 24, and Tim Newton, 27, went climbing on Ben Nevis one weekend last month, but had not been seen since Monday, February 15.

Police Scotland released a statement on Wednesday evening, over a month since their disappearance.

They said: "Following a report from a member of the public, the bodies of a man and a woman have been recovered in the Ben Nevis area this evening.

"Formal identification is taking place and the families of missing climbers Rachel Slater and Tim Newton have been informed."
