Alzheimer's disease affects women worse than men, study says
Research shows women are more badly affected by Alzheimer's than men at same stage of the disease.
Researchers have found that women with Alzheimer's have poorer cognitive abilities than men when they are at the same stage of the disease.
By conducting a detailed review of existing research, scientists from the University of Hertfordshire found that women suffer from poorer language skills and worse thinking functions, as well as poorer memory.
Professor Keith Laws who lead the team behind the research said it could be due to a reduction of oestrogen in post-menopausal women, or the influence of the Alzheimer's-linked APOE 4 gene.
