Gardeners across the UK are being called up to help save the Britain's "beleagured" butterflies

The Garden Butterfly Survey, launched by the wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation, aims to enhance understanding of the creatures found in Britain's back gardens.

The survey will ask participants to count butterflies every month and hopes to reveal declines and increases in numbers, how species are being affected by climate change, and which plants and gardens they prefer.

Richard Fox, head of recording at Butterfly Conservation, said he hoped the survey will appeal to Britain's green-fingered homeowners.
