A man has been reportedly arrested after claiming to have a bomb inside a suitcase he was trying to bring into the US Embassy in Berlin.

The 23-year-old is believed to have become violent with security staff after being turned away from the building in the Germany city at 7.30am, the Associated Press reported.

Police spokesperson Jens Berger said after being held the man told them there was a bomb in his suitcase at the entrance of the building, which is located close to the city's landmark Brandenburg Gate.

He confirmed the area was cleared while the case was inspected by a remote robotic device, which found only "personal items" including clothes.

Berger said few details about the man were known but added "there are many indications he is psychologically disturbed".
