An 11-year-old boy injured in a hit and run died on a road because motorists drove around him rather than stopping to help.

Instead of stopping to help the young boy, other motorists drove around him on the road, police told the local newspaper in East St Louis, Illinois, in the US.

Maurice’s grandmother Gertrude Richards told the St Louis Post Dispatch she wasn't sure how long he lay in road but said it was long enough for his clothes to become "drenched" from the rain.

A motorist did eventually stop, blocked off the street and called police.

The boy was taken to hospital but later died.

East St Louis Police condemned the motorists who drove by the boy's body.

Detective Jason Hicks said: "Just for the fact that they’re seeing someone lying in the street and didn’t render aid, they need to be held accountable."
