The driver of a car that plunged off a bridge in Sweden killing British indie band Viola Beach and their manager may have "acted deliberately", Swedish police have said.

The band, made up of Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe and Jack Dakin, and their manager Craig Tarry, died when their car crashed through a barrier and fell 80ft into a canal on 13 February.

The crash took place in Sodertalje, 18 miles from the capital Stockholm.

Lars Berglund, head of the Swedish police investigation into the crash, told ITV News the possibility that it was a deliberate act could not be ruled out.

However, Mr Berglund said it was more likely the tragic crash was an accident.

He also confirmed that CCTV footage shows the car driving up the hard shoulder at speed, colliding with a parked vehicle before crashing through the safety barrier.

Mr Berglund added that the impact of the crash with the barrier may have left the driver unconscious or damaged the windscreen obscuring the danger of the raised bridge ahead.

He also emphasised that the investigation is still ongoing and police are awaiting the results of detailed blood analysis and technical reports on the hire car.
