A mother and son have died after a fire broke out in a Dundee tenement building.

Firefighters were alerted to the incident on Park Avenue shortly before 7am on Thursday.

Evelyn McCabe, 56, and her son Steven Bown, 31, both died in the fire, police said.

Five fire engines were called to the scene, accompanied by police officers and paramedics.

Henry Stewart, who lives on Park avenue, said the first he knew of the fire was when he heard shouting outside. He was later evacuated along with all the other residents.

He said: "It's the top left flat. I always thought it was an empty flat until this morning when I discovered somebody was obviously living in it.

"I heard all the commotion, the noise and racket, lots of shouting. I looked out the front and saw all the fire brigade vehicles, police and ambulances.

"About half an hour later a guy was brought out and laid out on the pavement. Four firefighters and two paramedics were doing CPR on him.

"One guy had the air bag giving him oxygen, the other two were taking it in turns to press down on his chest. This was going on forever. I never seen any response from the lad.

"This went on for about 20 to 25 mins and then they put him on a stretcher and in the ambulance."

Another neighbour, Sean Rowan, said: "A big black stain appeared on my ceiling, I turned on my bedroom light and there was smoke pouring through it.

"I got out of my bed and called 999 and they told me to get my flatmate out of her bedroom and down onto the street as soon as possible.

"We were on the second floor, but I don’t know anything about the fire. There was white smoke pouring out of the building."

A cordon was established while police, fire crews and ambulance attended the scene.

A police spokesman said: "Police Scotland is continuing to carry out a joint investigation with Scottish Fire and Rescue Service into the circumstances of the fire."
