Neighbours described seeing smoke billowing from the building.
The fire is believed to have broken out on the third floor of the tenement building.
Five fire engines were called to the scene, accompanied by police officers and paramedics.
Neighbour Sean Rowan said: “A big black stain appeared on my ceiling, I turned on my bedroom light and there was smoke pouring through it.
“I got out of my bed and called 999 and they told me to get my flatmate out of her bedroom and down onto the street as soon as possible.
“We were on the second floor, but I don’t know anything about the fire. There was white smoke pouring out of the building.
