Family 'struggling' after father jailed in Saudi Arabia
Edinburgh takeaway owner Kausar Uddin arrested on pilgrimage to Mecca last month.
The family of an Edinburgh takeaway owner who is in prison in Saudi Arabia have said they feel let down by the authorities.
Kausar Uddin was arrested after going on a pilgrimage to Mecca last month with his wife, three children and a group from Blackhall Mosque.
Mr Uddin, who runs Eastern Masala in Leith, was caught up in a crowd in Islam’s most sacred mosque, the Masjid al-Haram.
His family said he tripped and grabbed a police officer to steady himself but was accused of assault.
Mr Uddin was jailed for 35 days on February 29 but has been warned he could be given a retrial and handed a two-year sentence.
His family are growing concerned for Mr Uddin's well-being and called on the authorities take action to support him.
Daughter Kaulsom Uddin, 17, from Sighthill in Edinburgh, said she was also worried about her father’s health.
The family claim Mr Uddin is in a cramped space with 500 prisoners and no space to lie down.
Kaulsom told STV News: "He said that there’s no room to even sit on the floor, he can’t even sleep, so he just has to keep standing."
She said the family was "struggling" and her eight-year-old brother keeps asking where his dad is.
"[The authorities] are saying he has to reach out to them but that’s hard for him when he is in prison," she said. We are just hoping and praying that he’s safe and he comes home safe."
Family friend Rizwan Raza said: "I can’t even describe how disappointed I am. In 11 days, nothing has been done."
Mr Uddin has only been able to speak to his relatives briefly on the phone, when he has told them that the conditions are "terrible".
Mr Raza said: "I believe people in the prison system are looking for money to get him out."
A Foreign Office spokesman said: "Our staff are providing assistance to a British national in Saudi Arabia following their arrest in February 2016.
"We will remain in contact with their family and local authorities."
