A former hospital worker has admitted killing British-born student Hannah Graham and another woman in the US.

Jesse Leroy Matthew Jnr pleaded guilty to the 18-year-old's murder and that of Morgan Harrington, aged 20.

His pleas mean he will avoid the death penalty he could have got if he was found guilty at trial.

University of Virginia student Hannah was last seen walking with Matthew in September 2014.

Her remains were later found at an abandoned property near the university campus in Charlottesville in October 2014.

Ms Harrington, a Virginia Tech student, disappeared after a Metallica concert in Charlottesville in 2009 and her remains were found on a farm in January 2010.

Hannah's father John Graham said Matthew's plea "kept Hannah's family and friends from being retraumatised by a murder trial".

He added: "Today's events do not bring Hannah back to us, of course.

"But the overriding priority was that Matthew will never again be able to inflict his depravity on young women."

Matthew is now serving four life sentences for the abduction and murders of Hannah and Ms Harrington, the attempted murder, abduction and sexual assault of another woman in northern Virginia.
