Designers unveil bold collection at Glasgow School of Art fashion show
Tennis courts, geometry and Glasgow builders all provided inspiration for this year's daring looks.
Glasgow's young designers have turned to the city's streets for inspiration this year for the art school's annual fashion showcase.
Young designers unveiled their collections at The Glasgow School of Art on Tuesday, including garments influenced by everything from tennis courts to Thai newspapers under the theme of 'geometry'.
"My inspiration was based on Glasgow so I took geometry within my surroundings using everyday men, just your normal Glasgow builder and really focused on urban wear and work wear," says 21-year-old Hannah Tan.
"I would love to just be in the fashion industry, though obviously we all dream of owning our own companies. But if I'm in it, that's good."
Featuring the work of 47 designers, the showcase is entirely organised by the students, with proceeds from the event donated to help the current students show their graduate collections down in London next year.
"The whole thing is a bit nerve-racking and a bit scary, we were kind of holding onto each other a bit backstage but it has been great fun and a great opportunity to see our stuff coming down the catwalk," says Roseanne Jack, whose work has already been shortlisted for an industry award.
"My three looks were inspired by the French Alps, which I know sounds a bit bonkers, but I wanted that snow white colour against the bright popping orange with dark royal blue to create this really lovely pattern.
"I'd love to get into the Scottish knitwear industry, so I'll hopefully end up getting into some design house down in the borders. I would love that, that's my dream."
For many of the students, being able to display their work in Scotland is a proud moment, though young designers like Roseanne are also keen to see the Scottish industry gain wider recognition.
"I'd love to see Scotland have a bigger footprint in the fashion world," says Roseanne.
"London is still very much the focus and their fashion week is unreal, but I'd love to see us have our own event on that scale . We've got some great young designers out there and they deserve a chance to be seen."
The Glasgow School of Art Fashion Show will take place over March 1-2 on Scott Street, Glasgow at 7pm and 9pm. Tickets are available online.
