A "fireball" which lit up the skies over the north of Scotland also set the country's social media users aflame on Monday evening.

The suspected meteor was spotted by many people, triggering calls to police from people claiming their homes shook.

Reports flooded in of a large white flash in the sky around 7pm, with Twitter users across the Highlands, Aberdeenshire and Perth saying they had witnessed the lights and loud bangs.

With panic striking the nation, it was left to Scottish twitter to shine a light on what was going on.

At first, there was confusion...

And fear.

So Scots went to the top to find out "what's been going on up there?"

Some stunning pictures were taken.

And people jumped to obvious and logical conclusions.

If not aliens, maybe another unwanted invader?

But one tweeter had Scotland's best interests at heart.

But inevitably, whether aliens or the much less likely meteor, in Scotland it all comes back to the referendum... Sigh.
