Demolition teams have moved in to begin dismantling homes at the Calais "Jungle" camp after a court ruling cleared the way for mass evictions.

Lines of police vans could be seen on the perimeters of the slum's southern section, with aid workers describing "bewildered and scared" migrants and refugees who were told they had no choice but to move on.

The Help Refugees charity said police blocked entrances to the camp, which is thought to hold around 4,000 people in makeshift homes.

French authorities say they want to relocate people from the squalid surroundings to heated containers nearby, or to other centres around France.

The lastest move follows a ruling in Lille that a partial clearance should take place - sparing social spaces such as schools and places of worship.
