A 35-year-old Indian man killed 14 members of his family including seven children before committing suicide, police said on Sunday.

The incident happened around midnight on Saturday, following a family celebration at the house in the Thane district just outside Mumbai.

The attacker, chartered accountant Husnain Anwar Warerkar, reportedly slit the throats of his parents, wife, children and three out of four sisters.

The lone survivor, his sister, was rushed to hospital after neighbours heard her cries for help and alerted the police.

Local media reports suggest Warekar attacked his family after lacing their food with a sedative.

"He killed others with a knife and hanged himself," said Joint Commissioner of Police, Ashutosh K Dumrare.

Neighbours said he had been a cheerful person and showed no signs of any psychological disorder.
