Call the Midwife’s Judy Parfitt has explained how the help of Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses was the one shining light as she nursed her husband through the debilitating neurological disorder.
The reason I want talk about it is because Dementia UK are doing ‘Time for a Cuppa starting next week to raise money for dementia and Admiral Nurses," Judy explained.
“We know cancer patients have Macmillan Nurses. And the dementia patients have162 Admiral Nurses for the whole country.
“And I can only tell you having looked after someone like that people get very nervous with people with dementia because they don’t know how to respond.
“When [my husband] was ill I had nobody. A couple of carers came to turn him over and bathe him. Towards the end I stood at the end of the bed and they talked over him as if he was a piece of meat.”
Judy added: “if there had been an Admiral Nurse there she would have known how to handle him and how to handle me. It’s very isolating.”
