Five-minute interview: Boxer Charlie Flynn on Tyson, haggis and his heroes
Commonwealth gold medallist chats diets, music and legends ahead of his fight with Jordan Ellison.
Commonwealth Gold medallist Charlie 'Mailman' Flynn is busy preparing for his seventh professional fight since quitting the amateur ranks and turning pro.
The former Royal Mail sorting office worker, who shot to fame in the summer of 2014 thanks to his fast hands and quick wit, is now hoping to go 7-0 as he takes on Englishman Jordan Ellison at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow on March 18.
The 22-year-old from Newarthill took time out of his relentless training schedule to talk teacakes, music and all things boxing ahead of his next fight.
You've got a big fight this week, how are you feeling?
I'm feeling good, preparations are going well. It’s just a matter of getting the sparring in and dropping the weight.
What’s your daily routine like at the moment?
I'm running every day, Sunday to Friday. I'm up at 6.30am and in the gym for 7am. I’ll train two hours in the morning and run about five or seven miles in the afternoon. So it's quite jam-packed .
What kind of diet are you following?
It’s always porridge in the morning, a bit of rice and a bit of chicken in the afternoon and fish at night. It’s not too hard to stick to.
What food will you treat yourself to after the fight?
I'm fighting a month later down in Leeds so I can’t really. If I'm fighting on the Friday I’ll probably have a wee something on the Saturday and then back in the gym on Monday.
What is your go-to when can have a cheat day?
Haggis suppers, Chinese food, TGI Fridays - everything, man.
Has your training regime changed dramatically since turning pro?
It’s just slowly tweaking quite a lot. I'm doing a lot of strength work now, building up my legs. Building up the sparring. I’m sometimes sparring 12 to 14 rounds just to get used to the rounds. It’s a lot tougher.
What music do you listen to to get you pumped for a fight?
I don’t listen to music before a fight, I just like to zone in. And I don’t listen to music when I train, only when I'm going running. I don’t think you should need music for motivation, if you can’t keep yourself going there is a problem, ‘cause when you’re in the ring you're not going to have music on - you're just in there yourself.
When you’re out running what’s your jam?
I'm just going to keep the music to myself. I don’t want to share that jazz, man. I’ve got weird music tastes, I don’t share them.
How old were you when you first got into boxing?
I was seven when I started boxing. I literally just followed my big brother up to the gym. I wasn’t meant to get in at that age but I just kept showing up and showing up and they let me in more or less.
With the OIympics round the corner, were you ever tempted to stay amateur and go for gold in Rio?
Well, I wasn't able to go to Rio because I wasn't Team GB. I've beaten the GB boxers but I wasn't on the team. So I was handicapped as far as amateurs was concerned. So there was no point in staying amateur because I couldn’t go to the Olympics or the Europeans but I don’t care - it was time to go pro anyway.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
Probably Dick McTaggart I’d say. He was a rat catcher, that was his job, but he still boxed and he won the Olympics, he won the Worlds, won the Europeans, won the Commonwealths. He was the last person to win the Commonwealths at my weight in the 60s. He was just a normal guy, you know what I mean? He came from a working class background and went and did some of the most amazing things. He went 634 fights and had 610 wins - it’s an unmatchable record.
Have you always been a bit of a natural athlete?
I played for the school team and scored two OGs and got sent off so definitely not a footballer. I've always been into boxing, since I was involved in it from such a young age.
What’s your favourite movie?
I dunno, what’s your favourite movie?
[STV]: The Usual Suspects.
I’m not sure, I’m just gonna say Gladiator.
What never fails to make you laugh?
My wee brother, Sam.
Who would win in a fight between Tyson v Ali?
I think Tyson would win that.
Sugar Ray Robinson v Mayweather?
Probably Mayweather.
Do you think Pacquiao and Mayweather should have a rematch?
I think that’s it. I think they're both past it. They should have fought four years ago.
If you could be in the corner for any boxer in history, who would it be?
I don’t know why but Roberto Duran. I just think it would be funny. He was a bit mental and he doesn't speak English either. I would just wind him up in the corner.
Tunnock’s Teacake or Caramel Wafer?
Teacake ... wait, no! Wafer, wafer.
Who would you choose to deliver a really important parcel: Royal Mail, UPS or FedEx?
Royal Mail. Especially if I was still with them.
What’s next for Charlie Flynn?
I’ll be up to ten round by the end of year and see what title we’re going to take and then end of next year we’ll be looking to move up the rankings and go for a British title.
Have you got a message for Jordan Ellison?
I'm training hard so be ready on the night.
