Suspicious death probed after injured man found in street
The 49-year-old was found seriously injured in the Parkhead area and later died.
A 49-year-old man has died in hospital after being found seriously injured on a Glasgow street.
Police have cordoned off several streets and a block of flats in the Parkhead area of Glasgow's east end after being called to the scene in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Police confirmed a major investigation is now under way around the Gallowgate area at Westmuir Street and Burgher Street.
Residents reported hearing shouting and sirens throughout the night from the early hours.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Officers were called out at around 12.40am on Tuesday, February 23, after a disturbance took place at Westmuir Street, Parkhead, in which a 49-year-old man sustained serious injuries.
"He was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he died a short time later.
"A post-mortem is to take place to establish the exact cause of his death, however at this time police are treating it as suspicious.
"A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal. The deceased will not be named until relatives informed."
Residents reported hearing police officers shouting in the street during the incident.
It is understood police were shouting at one person to "get up" and "show your hands".
Several police vans and unmarked police cars were seen in the area over the hours that followed.
When asked by residents what was happening, officers said a "major incident".
Westmuir Street is closed between Gallowgate and Crail Street. Police have advised drivers to use alternative routes.
