A man has been seriously injured in a fire at a block of flats in Dundee.

Emergency services were called to the building at Kinghorne Court at 8.49 am after a severe fire broke out in a first floor flat.

Police, fire and ambulance staff attended and a number of nearby roads were closed while the blaze was brought under control.

A number of people had to be rescued from the four-storey block.

Several were treated for minor injuries at the scene and one man was taken to Ninewells Hospital for further treatment.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said the man had been seriously injured.

Fire engines from Macalpine Road, Blackness Road and Balmossie Community Fire Stations were immediately dispatched following multiple 999 calls to report the blaze.

Firefighters arrived to find a well developed fire within the first floor flat and a number of residents trapped on upper floors.

A team of four firefighters wearing breathing equipment entered the flat and quickly dealt with the fire and removed the male resident.

At the same time firefighters used ladders to rescue people from the affected upper levels and reassured others.

The male occupant of the first flat was treated by paramedics on scene and then taken to hospital.

Five other adults, one child and one infant also received precautionary check-ups from paramedics on scene.

The cause of the fire remains unexplained and a joint police and fire investigation is to be carried out.
