From berry to bottle: Gin's popularity soars in Scotland
Country now producing 70% of UK total as demand in Edinburgh outstrips any other city in the world.
It is known as mother's ruin but gin is on the rise in Scotland, with Edinburgh now drinking more of the spirit than any other city in the world.
So many craft gin distilleries have sprung up north of the border that 70% of UK gin production now comes from Scotland.
Almost 60 new distilleries have opened their doors in the past two years in Scotland, doubling the number of gin brands.
Scots drank 29 million litres of gin last year, with 42% consumed by 18 to 34 year olds and 27% by over 45s.
The drink has become so popular that a Scottish Gin Trail has been created to celebrate the industry. It features 12 of the best craft distilleries, bars and landmarks and was launched last month to coincide with Burns Night.
With Scottish gin now being shipped to 139 countries and gin production bringing £1.76bn to the UK economy, could Scotland soon become as famous for its gin as its whisky?
