Last chance 40mth 0% debt shift, family and friend railcard code, gift card trick and Valentines’ Day booze. These are our Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis’ Quick Deals.

Remember, deals can change quickly, even while I’m on the programme. So always double-check the terms and conditions before spending. Plus, while I hope these deals will save you cash, don’t spend if you can’t afford it, don’t need it, or won’t use it.

Last chance to shift debt for 40 months 0%

A balance transfer is where you get a new card that pays off the debt on old cards for you. So you owe the new card but at a cheaper interest rate. And a price war on at the moment means that right now we’ve the record longest 0% balance transfer cards deals around. But this is all about to end. So if you need to shift debt do it now.

Ending Sunday. Virgin Money gives 40 months 0% - the longest ever – for a one-off fee of 2.89%. But this is ending Sunday, so if you need 40 months to clear you’re debt go for this.

Ending Monday. Halifax also gives up to 40 months 0%, for 2.95% fee. But crucially, this card is ‘up to’ 40 months, meaning not everyone gets this. Some with a poorer credit score could get fewer months.

Always follow the Golden Rules

  1. Never miss minimum monthly repayments, or the bank can end your 0% deal and charge far more.

  2. Don’t just apply willy-nilly that marks your credit file, use a soft search or eligibility checker like Martin’s eligibility calculator first to see which card you’re most likely to be accepted for.

  3. Clear the card or balance transfer before the 0% ends, or the rate rockets to 18.9% rep APR.

  4. Never withdraw cash or spend on the card. It's not at the 0% rate. It's often far more, and just doing it can hurt your credit file.
