
Gunshots reported in car park after thieves steal ATM in Co-op raid
The theft happened at around 4.30am on Friday in the Angus town of Carnoustie.
Gun shots have been reported during a police incident in Angus after a cash machine was stolen in a raid on a Co-op.
The theft incident happened at around 4.30am on Friday on Barry Road in Carnoustie when thieves broke into the shop and stole the ATM.
Later in the morning heavy police activity was reported at McDonald's in Arbroath.
The fast food outlet was cordoned off for several hours while police appeared to apprehend a number of men in the car park.
It is understood gun shots were heard during the incident and all McDonald's customers were forced to stay inside the diner for an hour.
Police Scotland detective inspector Andy Patrick said: "We are appealing to the public for information following the theft of an ATM.
"Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and we are being supported by specialist officers.
"The public will see a visible police presence in the area for some time as we continue with our investigation into the incident."
Numerous police vehicles were also seen waiting on Forfar Road and along the Kingsway on Friday morning.
It is understood this may be linked to the ATM theft.
