An Indian soldier has been found alive after six days after he was caught up in an avalanche, an official has reported.

Lance Naik Hanamanthappa was one of ten soldiers feared dead after an avalanche hit the Siachen glacier in the Kashmir region on February 3.

Following the incident it was thought there was little chance of finding anyone alive.

The other nine soldiers all died, army official General Hooda confirmed in a statement on Monday which was reported by the AFP news agency.

Lance Naik Hanamanthappa is reported to be in a critical condition and expected to be taken to an army hospital in New Delhi.

India's Minister of State for External Affairs took to Twitter to wish the junior soldier a "speedy recovery".

The soldiers had been stationed at an army post at almost 20,000 ft in the Ladakh region.

Indian troops patrol the Siachen Glacier in Kashmir, which is an area disputed between India and Pakistan.
