Firefighters are tackling a major fire at an industrial unit which has forced the closure of a road for almost seven hours.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Friday in the Merchiston Industrial Estate found in Falkirk.

Firefighters and police remained at the scene into Friday morning and the A9 was forced to close for at least seven hours while they fought to bring the blaze under control.

There are no reports of anyone being injured and the cause of the fire is not yet known.

A statement from Police Scotland said: "A member of the public raised the alarm with emergency services after noticing smoke coming from one of the units.

"Local road diversions are in place while firefighters tackle the blaze and members of the local community are thanked for their cooperation and patience.

"At this time there have been no reports of any injury and the cause of the blaze is unknown.

"Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police on 101 or the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
