A British woman has died in a skiing accident in the French Alps.

The 53-year-old victim was skiing on a blue run - a ski run suitable for novices - in the popular resort of La Plagne when she lost control and hit a tree on Monday morning.

She died of her injuries at the scene despite the efforts of a mountain rescue team.

The Foreign Office confirmed it was providing assistance to the victim's family and was liaising with local officials.

The woman was the second British tourist to die abroad on Monday after Gareth Crowe was killed by an elephant while on holiday in Thailand.
