Police are appealing for information after a serious sexual assault on a woman in Aberdeen city centre.

They were called to Union Terrace Gardens following the attack at around 3am on Thursday.

Officers and forensic teams cordoned off the park and examined the scene on Thursday morning.

Chief inspector Graham Mackie said: "This was a serious assault on a woman in the city centre and we would urge anyone who may have been in the Union Terrace Gardens area at that time and who saw or heard anything untoward to come forward with any information they may have.

"I'd like to reassure the public that these types of incidents are unusual, however, we would encourage people to be vigilant."

Two men were seen in the same area around the time of the incident and police have appealed for them to come forward with any information they may have.

If anyone has any information they should contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
