Report into death of man who died in police chase handed to Crown
Dean Wood, 21, was being pursued by an armed response vehicle when he fell into the River Forth.
The police watchdog has concluded its investigation into the death of a man who fell from the Clackmannanshire Bridge while being chased by a police armed response vehicle.
Dean Wood, 21, from Sauchie in Clackmannanshire, was driving a van when police tried to him pull him over at around 2.50am on November 13.
It is understood the armed response vehicle was travelling in the area for another matter and spotted his blue Ford Transit van travelling with only three wheels.
When they signalled him to stop, it is believed Mr Wood crashed into a barrier on the bridge before getting out of the vehicle and climbing over the safety railings. Mr Wood was then seen falling from the bridge and into the water.
The Crown Office instructed the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) and the investigation is now complete. The findings, which have not been made public, have been handed to the Crown office for further consideration. One possible outcome is a fatal accident inquiry.
A spokesman for PIRC said: "The commissioner has now concluded the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Dean Wood and a report has been sent to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service for their consideration."
An extensive search of the waters by the coastguard and police in the days after Mr Wood fell from the bridge failed to find any sign of him.
His family and friends undertook their own searches in the weeks after the incident. Mr Wood's body was finally found by a member of the public on December 11. He was buried on January 15.
A statement from his family the day after he fell said: "Dean is a likeable, good-natured young man with a zest for life and a good sense of humour."
