Residents at a block of flats in Dundee have been evacuated after parts of the roof blew off in high winds.

One roof panel dangled over the side of Gourlay Yard, at City Quay, on Monday and was battered against the building and window frames by the high winds.

It was prevented from falling by a thin wire connected to the roof.

Other parts fell off completely, causing insulation material to be exposed to the elements and to blow all over the car park and public areas below.

Emergency service vehicles were called to the scene and cordoned off affected areas as parts of the roof teetered on the edge of the building.

For most of the afternoon residents who were already inside the building were warned to stay indoors and keep away from windows.

Those trying to enter their properties were not allowed in.

At around 5.45pm police took the decision to evacuate those inside over fears that water could enter the properties at the top of the block via the damaged roof sections.

It was feared the water would reach the electrical systems and pose a danger to those inside.

A police spokeswoman said: "Following consultation with Dundee City Council this afternoon, Police Scotland is assisting in the evacuation of 33 properties at Gourlay Yard, City Quay, Dundee due to continuing concerns regarding the safety of the roof on the building.

"Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has temporarily secured some sections of the roof this afternoon, however permanent repairs are expected to be carried out later this week.

"In discussion with the building factors, Dundee City Council is coordinating accommodation for residents evacuated this evening.

"Barriers are in place at Gourlay Yard to prevent pedestrian access to the area and in the interests of safety, police would ask that members of the public do not approach the building."
