Saudi Arabia executed 47 people today for 'terrorism', according to a statement from the Interior Ministry.

Most of the people executed, including prominent Shi'ite Muslim cleric Nimr al-Nimr, were allegedly involved in a series of attacks attributed to Al-Qaeda between 2003 and 2006.

Iran has reportedly warned that executing Nimr "would cost Saudi Arabia dearly" and protests over his death have been taking place in Bahrain.

Lebanon's Supreme Islamic Shi'ite Council also condemned the execution saying it was a "grave mistake".
